Geographically speaking, The Golden Gate City might technically be on the smaller side of the spectrum (just under 47 square miles), but there are tons of great attractions, events and points of interest that are packed tightly into it. And though there are certainly too many of these attractions to squeeze into just one vacation, there are a handful of essentials that every first-time traveler to San Francisco should get the chance to experience.

Here are a few to start off with:

1. Catch a lift on a cable car.

A staple of San Francisco since the late 1800s, the cable car is not only an efficient way of transporting up the steep hills of the city, but it’s also the most historic. Passengers can enjoy scenic rides between around 6 a.m. through about 12:30 a.m. any day of the week. (But be sure to bring a jacket, as the winds can make the ride a bit chilly!)

2. Indulge in some delicious local eats.

Foodies will love visiting the Ferry Building Marketplace not only for their great restaurants, cafes and small eateries, but also for their many shops, brimming with fresh grocery items, such as artisan cheeses, fresh local produce, handmade chocolates and pastries, and more. Plus, there is a wide variety other dining options, including food trucks, bakeries, steakhouses and much more nearby.

3. Visit the iconic Fisherman’s Wharf.

This classic attraction tends to be pretty touristy most times of the year, but it is one that should be experienced nonetheless. It’s home to several top attractions, including PIER 39, which features RocketBoat rides, bay cruises, sea lion sightings and just about everything in between. The wharf is also where you can take a ferry ride to the Golden Gate Bridge or Alcatraz—two popular local attractions.

4. Take a stroll across the Golden Gate Bridge.

One of the most internationally recognized symbols of San Francisco and the city’s most popular attraction, the mile-long Golden Gate Bridge is a sight that is best seen up close. No matter what time of year you choose to visit, this breathtaking landmark is ideal to walk, bike or drive over to see the city’s many gorgeous views.

5. Ride the ferry to “The Rock”.

Another renowned attraction that’s quite unique to the San Francisco area is Alcatraz (nicknamed “The Rock”). This iconic museum and former penitentiary sits atop a small and rocky island on San Francisco Bay, and is ideal for guests of all ages. Visitors can enjoy a ferry trip around the island, as well as a guided tour of the buildings and grounds, which include detailed stories about many of the inmates’ failed attempts of escape.

6. Get in some retail therapy at the shops in Union Square.

From antique shops and boutiques, to major department stores and more, Union Square is perfect for shoppers of all tastes. During the holidays, special events and activities are featured as well, including ice skating, festivals, a Christmas tree lighting ceremony and many other things to do for the whole family to enjoy together.

7. Enjoy a relaxing afternoon in Golden Gate Park.

This San Francisco gem attracts more than 13 million visitors to its 1,017 acres of land each year, offering lush gardens, scenic trails, picturesque picnic groves and other great outdoor attractions/activities fit for any age. The park is host to the annual Dahlia Show, various auctions and art shows, musical festivals, and more.

8. Become one with nature at Muir Woods National Monument.

Another great way to explore the great outdoors in San Francisco, this national monument offers an assortment of trails, beaches, historic sites, estates, lighthouses and more to explore any time of year. It’s a great place to connect with nature while also connecting with family, friends or a loved one during your trip.

9. Try out a delicious dim sum lunch in Chinatown.

The first one of its name in the United States, San Francisco’s Chinatown is an exciting city within a city, spanning across 24 blocks. Visitors can enjoy walking through the bustling shops, markets, museums, temples and restaurants, and even get a taste of authentic dim sum while exploring.

10. Check out some fascinating museums, theaters and science centers.

Whether you’re looking to expand your knowledge in the sciences or enrich your cultural awareness, there are plenty of ways to enjoy both in The Golden Gate City. From the Asian Art Museum and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, to the Exploratorium and the California Academy of Sciences, there are many ways to fit in some great theatrical performances, artwork showcases and science education.
