The E-Z Way | Honeymooning That's E-Z On Your Wallet

There’s no rule that says honeymoons have to cost a small fortune in order to be great.  After all, the most important thing is to spend time alone with your new spouse.  As you work with a travel agent to come up with ideas that are in line with your budget, keep these strategies in mind.

Think Off-Season
Certain destinations are associated with specific times of the year.  For example, a beach resort is one of the go-to options for summertime honeymoons.  What if you turn things around and think about destinations that are not so readily associated with the time of year that you’ve chosen for the wedding?

For example, find out what a ski resort has to offer during the summer months.  No snow on the ground will mean lower rates and possibly the chance to enjoy more privacy.  Assuming the resort includes swimming pools, tennis courts, and various forms of entertainment nearby, you and your new spouse can have a great time at a fraction of the in-season cost.

Look at Adjacent Locales
Your heart is set on a honeymoon in Miami Beach, but the budget says no.  Instead of giving up on the idea, expand the search to include hotels and guest cottages located in the greater Miami area.  A charming cottage that is a little off the beaten path but still within a few miles of the beach is less expensive than anything on the beach.  As a bonus, you and your spouse won’t have to put up with noisy neighbors in an adjoining suite.

Opt for a Spot That is within Driving Distance
Lodging is not the only expense associated with a honeymoon.  There’s also the matter of getting to and from the destination.  You can reduce that cost by choosing a venue that is just a few hours away from home.

This approach will allow the two of you to take your own vehicle and avoid airfare and renting a car for the duration of the honeymoon.  The money you save on transportation costs will mean that there is more money to spend on dining out and enjoying other amusements at the honeymoon spot of your choice.

If you go this route, make sure the chosen location is far enough away to discourage loved ones from dropping by, and close enough for the two of you to reach in a matter of hours.  To further discourage any interruptions, be very vague about where you are going.  Only one or two trusted people need to know how to make contact in the event of an emergency.

Through it all, remember that a honeymoon is less about where you stay and more about who you are with.  As long as the setting is comfortable, provides the right amount of privacy, and includes the amenities that both of you will enjoy, the destination is all you need for the perfect honeymoon.
